It operates retail outlets to meet the needs of local residents. Thursday Island has a supermarket, petrol station and stores at Rosehill and Tamwoy. There are 13 stores on the outer Torres Strait Islands. On the mainland a supermarket is operated in Bamaga.
The Island Industries Board (IIB) is an unfunded not for profit Queensland Government Statutory Board which is registered as a charity by the Australian Taxation Office. Islanders Board of Industry and Service (IBIS) operates under the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities (Justice, Land and Other Matters) Act 1984 (Qld).
It is a signatory to the IBIS - Warraber Indigenous Land Use Agreement (ILUA).
It is also a party to the native title consent determination Woosup on behalf of the Northern Cape York Group #1 v State of Queensland (No 3)  FCA 1148.
