'With an area of 27,793 square kilometres, the Shire of Booringa is situated approximately half way between Brisbane and Longreach.

More than half of the Booringa's population of 2,000 live in the town of Mitchell where the shire has its base, with the remainder spread throughout the two smaller centres of Amby and Mungallala and the vast rural area.' (Booringa Shire Council Website, June 2007)
