Summary Information:
The New Zealand Settlements Act 1863 was passed to legitimise the confiscation of lands from Maori by the Crown. Passed in December of 1863, the Act allowed for the confiscation of land – without compensation – from any North Island tribe said to be ‘in rebellion against Her Majesty’s authority’. Under the provisions of this Act Te Ati Awa lost all their Taranaki lands.
