Sub Category:Joint Venture Agreement
Location:West Cape York, Queensland, Australia
Subject Matter:Collaboration / Partnership | Economic Development | Employment and Training | Mining and Minerals
Summary Information:
The Nanum Tawap Timber Joint Venture Agreement is one of two joint venture schemes to create development opportunities for West Cape York Aboriginal communities through operations to salvage timber from bauxite mine operations in the region. According to Queensland Premier Peter Beattie, the joint venture agreements will generate more than 20 jobs for local community members.

Under the Nanum Tawup agreement, the smaller of the two joint ventures, Nanum Tawap Ltd, an Indigenous company representing the traditional owners of the Napranum area, will work with the assistance of the Queensland Government to produce sawn timber. The project will source timber from a local mining lease and produce the sawn timber for a high value market. The joint venture is supported by Comalco, the operator of bauxite mining operations.

Announcing the two joint venture agreements on 17 August 2004, Mr Beattie said: 'Through the Cape York Partnerships program, the Queensland Government has recognised the importance of developing joint venture partnerships between the private sector and Indigenous communities for a range of Indigenous micro business communities… These two joint venture schemes are a good example of development opportunities available on Cape York that can generate new local jobs'.
